Time to limber up for Tinahely Trailwalking
‘SHEEP FLOCK’ TO GATHER FOR THIS YEAR’S EVENT
A WONDERFUL weekend packed with trailwalking and art takes place in Tinahely over the May Bank Holiday as the second annual Tinahely Trailwalking Festival gets underway.
The festival will see a number of guided walks on popular local routes which are already firm favourites with locals and visiting walkers alike.
A new element to this year's festival comes in the form of a large scale art project courtesy of Tinahely Arts Group ( TAG) which coincides with the trailwalking events.
The ' Tinahely Sheep Flock' will comprise approximately thirty two dimensional metal sheep ( almost one metre in length and more than half a metre in height, with some smaller lambs), each of which will be customised by individual artists in a variety of styles and materials. The flock will celebrate Tinahely's history as a vibrant market town and will be unveiled at a central location on Friday April 29 in time for the festival.
Each sheep will feature a tag identifying its designer and the flock will make a striking visual display for this busy weekend.
For the summer months, the eye-catching flock will be situated out and about around Tinahely for the enjoyment of visitors and locals alike. In the autumn they will return to the Market Square before returning to be overwintered with their artist owners.
It is hoped that they will increase and multiply over the winter months and will return again to the hills and roads around Tinahely each summer.
On Sunday May 1 a craft fair with working stalls hosted by local artists and crafts people will be set up where visitors will have an opportunity to see the artists at work and perhaps purchase some of their craftwork. The evening will also include a parade of vintage cars and machinery led by The Michael Dwyer Pipe Band. This year's festival also includes a photography competition with all entries on display in the Courthouse Arts Centre during the festival.
