ST. MARY’S, ARKLOW
St. Mary's College, together with 6 other schools from England, Iceland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey are currently taking part in a EU funded Comenius project entitled: Finding my Voice - Democracy in Action.
As part of this project, representative students and teachers visited England from 28 Feb until 4 Mar and were hosted by the English project school, Upton Hall, Liverpool.
The week consisted of project meetings and visits to places of democratic and political significance, in particular Wallasey Town Hall, Wirral, and the Houses of Parliament, Westminster, London.
The group met the Mayor of Wirral, Councillor Alan Jennings, and also enjoyed a question and answer session with 3 Wirral Councillors representing the Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat Parties. The trip to Westminster proved just as interesting with an informative tour of both Houses of Parliament and a live video link to the Prime Ministers Question Time which highlighted the passion and lively banter of the House of Commons! To end the week, the whole group travelled to Arklow to enjoy the hospitality of St. Mary's College.
The Transition Year Comenius class hosted the students from the 6 visiting countries.
Teachers and students enjoyed a guided tour of St.Mary's, an afternoon of entertainment which delighted all and a trip to Glendalough during their short stay.
Overall it was a wonderful week of cultural learning, productive research and democratic insights. The next project meeting is in Iceland in April.
On the Wednesday, March 23, the TY students participated in Emmanuel, a spectacular evening of music in the Helix, DCU, Dublin. Emmanuel is a project of the Dublin Diocesan Commission for Sacred Music and promotes the use of Sacred Music in secondary schools.
Over 40 schools and their choirs were involved in the event. Well done to the TY choir and Mr Tim Hicks, choir master, on their great achievement. Particular congratulations to the fantastically talented soloists: Roisin Hunt, Lauren Smith and Kathleen Holden.
