HISTORY Society members are looking forward to the April lecture which will take place in the Glencormac Inn at 8.30 pm on Tuesday 5th April. Titled “From Post Box to Proclamation - the Post Office in Irish life” it will be presented by Stephen Ferguson and he will outline the development of the Irish Post Office and describe the part that post boxes and delivery methods have played in this. He will show how the Postal Service has been an integral part of Irish life. Special mention will be given to our own 1868 Penfold Victorian box (currently away for repairs at the moment). Suggestions on its location upon return to Kilmacanogue will be welcomed at the meeting. Stephen Ferguson is Assistant Secretary of An Post with responsibilities that include postal heritage. He has set up and developed the Irish Postal Museum, opened recently at the GPO, and which is well worth a visit. He is author of “The Irish Post Box” published in 2009 by An Post. Entry is just €3 (€2 for members) and all are welcome.
