Ark­low ladies make his­tory with ti­tle win

ON A his­toric oc­ca­sion, in this the 90th an­niver­sary year of Ark­low Lawn Ten­nis Club, the Ark­low Ladies team won the clubs first ever Dublin Lawn Ten­nis Coun­cil Pen­nant, with vic­tory over Naas, in the Divi­sion 6 Win­ter League fi­nal.

Over 500 teams com­peted in 14 di­vi­sions and the fi­nals were co­hosted at the magnificent fa­cil­i­ties at Grey­stones Ten­nis Club, and Sut­ton TC.

The Ark­low Ladies team were Kay Hickey and Irene Ry­der (won 6-3, 6-3), Martina Be­han (Capt.) and Mags Kelly (3-6, 5-5 n/f) and Jac­inta Kinch and Lu­cia McMa­hon (won 7-5, 7-6).

The team would like to thank all their sup­port­ers, the DLTC, Grey­stones TC and all the staff at Shore­line Sports Park, Charles­land for all their work and sup­port through­out the League.

In the fi­nals of the clubs own Win­ter League, the Divi­sion 1 fi­nal was won by Frank Dennehy and Mags Kelly who beat Kevin Flana­gan and Jac­inta Kinch 6-4, 6-2, and in Divi­sion 2 Sea­mus Hickey and Hugh Kane over­came Mike Ness­bitt and Therese Nazari in three sets.

The club also hosted the An­nual Daf­fodil Day Tour­na­ment for the Ir­ish Cancer So­ci­ety, kindly spon­sored by Donal and Mary Byrne, and this fun tour­na­ment was won to rap­tur­ous ap­plause by Mrs. Eleanor Byrne and her part­ner Frank Dennehy.

Our Ju­nior pro­gramme con­tin­ues with coach Mr. David Shee­han (tel. 087 8166525) and up and com­ing events in­clude Easter four-day camps from 10 -1 p.m., both weeks of the Easter hol­i­days, Mon­day- Thurs­day April 18th-21st, and Tues­day-Fri­day April 26th-29th (€50 mem­bers, €60 non mem­bers, call David for en­quiries or to book in). Also, we are hop­ing to hear from all five and six-year-olds as the club is hop­ing to start a spe­cial Satur­day morn­ing class from 9.15-10 a.m. for younger kids shortly.
