Arklow ladies make history with title win
ON A historic occasion, in this the 90th anniversary year of Arklow Lawn Tennis Club, the Arklow Ladies team won the clubs first ever Dublin Lawn Tennis Council Pennant, with victory over Naas, in the Division 6 Winter League final.
Over 500 teams competed in 14 divisions and the finals were cohosted at the magnificent facilities at Greystones Tennis Club, and Sutton TC.
The Arklow Ladies team were Kay Hickey and Irene Ryder (won 6-3, 6-3), Martina Behan (Capt.) and Mags Kelly (3-6, 5-5 n/f) and Jacinta Kinch and Lucia McMahon (won 7-5, 7-6).
The team would like to thank all their supporters, the DLTC, Greystones TC and all the staff at Shoreline Sports Park, Charlesland for all their work and support throughout the League.
In the finals of the clubs own Winter League, the Division 1 final was won by Frank Dennehy and Mags Kelly who beat Kevin Flanagan and Jacinta Kinch 6-4, 6-2, and in Division 2 Seamus Hickey and Hugh Kane overcame Mike Nessbitt and Therese Nazari in three sets.
The club also hosted the Annual Daffodil Day Tournament for the Irish Cancer Society, kindly sponsored by Donal and Mary Byrne, and this fun tournament was won to rapturous applause by Mrs. Eleanor Byrne and her partner Frank Dennehy.
Our Junior programme continues with coach Mr. David Sheehan (tel. 087 8166525) and up and coming events include Easter four-day camps from 10 -1 p.m., both weeks of the Easter holidays, Monday- Thursday April 18th-21st, and Tuesday-Friday April 26th-29th (€50 members, €60 non members, call David for enquiries or to book in). Also, we are hoping to hear from all five and six-year-olds as the club is hoping to start a special Saturday morning class from 9.15-10 a.m. for younger kids shortly.
