Gators on song against Malahide
Wicklow Lady Gators 47, Malahide 23
WITH ONLY three games left in the league the Wicklow Lady Gators who are tied for third place in the Dublin Senior Womens Division 3 league table, were determined to keep their place. Very slow to start the Gators did not score until the sixth minute when Patrice Franey scored off a great drive.
This was followed by a strong offensive rebound by Christine Kavanagh who then scored to give the Gators a slim 5 -3 lead which Malahide soon levelled as the first quarter came to an end.
The Lady Gators hit their stride in the second quarter. Early baskets from Erika Davis and Lillian Kavanagh saw the Gators lead 15-8. Strong defensive rebounding by Yasmine Larkin, Kristine Delahunt, Katie O'Connor and Ciara Broe gave the bigger Malahide team no second chance opportunities. Then as Patrica Delahunt led the break with Laura Hodginkson the Gators built up a lead they never relinquished and led at half-time 22-10.
Looking to fast break and up the tempo in the third quarter the Gators were running from the start, two free thows from Patrice Franey, a three-pointer from Christine Kavanagh and a strong drive by Yasmine Larkin saw the Gators lead 29-10. Siobhain Vickers and Patrica Delahunt both pushed the ball off the boards and fed the fast breaking Katie O'Connor and Laura Hodginkson who finished off with crucial baskets.
But for the Gators it was another great defensive display as they challenged every shot, hussled all over the floor and won 90 per cent of their rebounds and with Kristine Delahunt blocking three shots in a row as Malahide tried to get to the basket, the Gators knew they were in control.
With point guard Stacey Healy picking up an early finger injury the Gators had to change plan and Siobhain Vickers took over duty with Laura Hodginkson and both controlled the game to the end.
In the final quarter the Gators scored only two baskets from the outside shooting of Kristine Delahunt. For the Gators this was another good win as the whole team contributed to the scoring tally. It was a great defensive performance, by all the players, as the Gators have become a more balanced squad.
