Rovers pipped by Phoenix FC
Wicklow Rovers 2, Phoenix FC 3 (AET): Wicklow Rovers exited the Lanigan Cup at the weekend when Phoenix FC squeezed past them by three goals to two after extra time.
Rovers took the lead in this tie after 29 minutes. Shane Cassidy found Davy O'Sullivan who in turn slipped it to Jim Foley and his 25 yard effort flew into the top right hand corner of the Phoenix net.
The Whitegates side's lead only lasted eight minutes though as the visitors hit back when their left-back calmly converted a penalty.
The Dublin side were denied by the woodwork moments later but it was Rovers who should have went in ahead at the break but Jim Foley's volley was superbly kept out by the Phoenix goalkeeper.
Wicklow looked to be advancing to the next round in the 83rd minute when they retook the lead when former Irish Colleges international Davy O'Sullivan found the back of the net with an overhead kick.
But the away side found themselves almost immediately. Phoenix broke dangerously and Paul Alexander brought down an attacker in the Rovers penalty area. He received his marching orders and Phoenix was awarded a second spot kick, which the number three once again dispatched.
And the 10 men of Wicklow Rovers suffered extra time heartbreak when a Phoenix striker saw his shot deflected past home goalkeeper Arthur Delahunt for the decisive goal of the game.
