Rathnew and Arklow Town leading the way

Bray People - - SPORT -

ARKLOW TOWN and Rathnew AFC are the new top guns in the U-17 League.

Having led the charge since day one almost, Liffey Valley Rangers finally relinquished their grip on top spot when they were held to a 1-1 draw by Greystones United at the Woodlands on Saturday.

Sam Thompson netted the 'Stones goal as they extended Rangers' winless streak to three matches.

And Arklow Town and Rathnew AFC took full advantage of the Dublin side's slip-up as they recorded their 13th league wins of the season.

The Bridgewater Centre Park was the setting for Arklow Town's 7-0 mauling of Lakelands which has seen them edge Rathnew into pole position on goal difference.

Andy Mulligan and Gavin McDevitte contributed two goals apiece, while Ciarán Byrne, Aidan O'Callaghan and Shane Walker chipped in with scores also.

Rathnew AFC meanwhile maintained their 100 per cent record thanks to a 4-2 victory over Granada A at Shamrock Park .

The visitors took an early lead against the Villagers but they levelled through Conor Cox. Granada got their noses in front again shortly after the restart but for the second time of asking, Rathnew hit back, this time thanks to Wicklow U-15 star Graham Merrigan.

Jamie Snell's powerful header then gave the hosts the lead for the first time in the contest and top scorer Shane Doyle wrapped up the win for the home side late on.

Elsewhere, Enniskerry YC and Tymon Celtic played out a 1-1 draw at Berryfield Lane.
