Susan Cox celebrates her 100th birthday
LOCAL LADY Susan Cox celebrated a century on this earth at a party in Bray Golf Club last Saturday afternoon.
Susan was born in Cork on December 1912 to Harry and Madeline Good.
She was the second child in her family, with an elder sister called Elizabeth and a younger brother called Robert.
The family moved to Bray around 1930. Susan met Arthur and they got married on April 11 1934. They bought a home in Stillorgan and started their family.
Sadly, the oldest of their five children, Ronnie, died in the 1980s. They also had a little daughter Elizabeth Ann who only lived a few weeks.
They moved to Bray in 1943 and took over the Clonalon guest house on Meath Road.
‘It was extremely hard work,' said Susan's son Arthur. ‘I would not recommend this kind of slavery to anyone; however Mum and Dad kept it going for 33 years.'
He added that the business helped give their four sons a very good education.
They sold the guesthouse and moved to Kind Edward Road, then later Wyndham Court. Susan's husband Arthur passed away in 1987 and she continued to live at the Wyndham Court home for many years.
After staying with Derrick and and Edna for some five years, eventually the time came for Susan to move to the Dargle Valley nursing home. She is very well cared for there and the staff are very kind and attentive.
‘Mum is obviously made of very stern stuff,' said Arthur. ‘With the help of God, her family and many kind friends she will have many more years of good health and happiness.'
The 100th birthday party was attended by Susan's three sons Alan, Arthur and Derrick, as well as her daughters-in-law, ten grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and other family members and friends.
