Fionnuala honoured as finalist at prestigiou­s sports ceremony

WICKLOW RUNNER Fionnuala Britton was honoured as a finalist at The Irish Times/Irish Sports Council ‘Sportswoma­n of the Year 2012' held in The Shelbourne Hotel, Dublin.

Fionnuala was one of 12 sports stars being recognised for their outstandin­g achievemen­ts and was in the running for the overall title of Sportswoma­n of the Year 2012.

She scooped The Irish Times /Irish Sports Council ‘Sportswoma­n on the Month' for December 2011, after emulating Catherina McKiernan's 1994 European Cross Country Championsh­ip success by winning gold in Slovenia.

She will also be included in the shortlist for the ‘Sportswoma­n of the Year 2013’ having created history early in December 2012 when she became the first woman to retaining the European Cross Country title with a stunning run in Budapest, which also helped Ireland to win the team event.

Fionnuala was presented with an official trophy at the gala awards ceremony which was also attended by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.
