2013 albums from U2, Gaga, Eminem, Villagers, and more...
WILL we see a new U2 album in 2013? Yes, according to Paul McGuinness who told the Irish Independent just before Christmas that we can ‘certainly expect a new record' this year.
The U2 manager's comment confirmed what Mercury Records UK label president Jason Iley said back in July when he tweeted: ‘2013 could be one of the best years Mercury's ever had'.
He was referring to the news that Mercury expected to release new albums from not only U2 but also Metallica, Arcade Fire and Noah And The Whale in 2013.
It's not yet clear if the Metallica album will see the light this year but they have been working on a 3D concert movie and that's almost certain to get a summer 2013 release.
Meanwhile, Arcade Fire are confident that their fourth album will be released in 2013, probably late in the year, according to recent comments by drummer Jeremy Gara. And Noah and the Whale also plan to release their fourth in 2013, with the folksy quintet promising a return to the English roots.
So what else can we expect on the album front this year?
Kings of Leon have been working on material for their sixth studio album, and with a string of summer dates already announced, it doesn't take a genius to predict an album release to coincide with the tour.
Lady Gaga confirmed as far back as August that her fourth studio album would be called ‘Artpop' and released in 2013. Gaga says she sees ‘ Artpop' as a project rather than simply an album and plans an Artpop app allowing fans to interact, view film clips of songs and access extra music. Expect a late spring release date.
Among the other major league stars planning a 2013 album is Eminem who shunned Twitter and Facebook when announcing his intention to release his eighth album in 2013 back in October. Instead, the rapper posted a picture of a limited edition baseball cap for his hometown of Detroit, with a side panel listing the years of all his solo albums...including a discreetly stitched ‘2013'.
With Eminem dates already confirmed for the summer - including a Reading and Leeds festivals headliner - we could see the followup to 2010's ‘Recovery' around that time.
One eagerly awaited album with a confirmed release date is Azealia Banks' ‘Broke With Expensive Taste' which comes out February 11.
After the success of her ‘212' single, ‘1991' EP and ‘Fantasea' mixtape, much is expected of the debut album from the celebrated New York singer and rapper.
Other artists with albums in production for the year ahead include Beyonce, Katy Perry, Dido (‘Girl Who Got Away', March 5), Paramore (self titled, April 9), Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds (‘Push The Sky Away', February 18), The Smiths’ Johnny Marr (‘ The Messenger', February 26), Villagers (‘Awayland', April 9), 50 Cent (‘Street King Immortal', February 26), Deep Purple, Justin Bieber, Pearl Jam, Nicki Minaj, Akon and Beck who, apparently, plans to release two albums in coming months.
Given Rihanna's prolific output, I suppose we shouldn’t rule out something from her as well.
U2 - new album on the way this year.
