Carnew sheet­metal worker Mar­cus is ‘Best in Ire­land’

A SKILLED ap­pren­tice from Carnew has been crowned Best in Ire­land at sheet­metal work in the Ire­land Skills Na­tional Com­pe­ti­tion.

Mar­cus Do­ran of To­ma­cork, Carnew, re­cently re­turned home tri­umphant to his place of work, Iron Crafts Ltd, Stain­less Steel Fab­ri­ca­tors on Carnew's Main Street, with his na­tional awards for Sheet­metal Work in tow.

Mar­cus, a former pupil of Co­laiste Bhride Carnew, has been a Fas reg­is­tered ap­pren­tice since early 2009 with Iron Crafts, whose main area of work is the man­u­fac­ture of goods for the ca­ter­ing trade.

‘Our work­shop prac­tise is to have our ap­pren­tices be­come skilled at each stage of the man­u­fac­tur­ing process, from read­ing ini­tial draw­ings, through as­sem­bly and weld­ing of items, to clean­ing and pol­ish­ing of the fin­ished goods,' said Tony Flood of Carnew Iron-crafts.

‘We re­alised early on that Mar­cus has a real ap­ti­tude for this work and we were de­lighted to learn that he was be­ing put for- ward for the Ire­land Skills Na­tional Com­pe­ti­tion 2012, or­gan­ised by DIT (Dublin In­sti­tute of Tech­nol­ogy) and gave him ev­ery en­cour­age­ment to go for it,' he added.

The com­pe­ti­tion in­volves ap­pren­tices from var­i­ous trades, who are ' top of their class' com­pet­ing over three days to be deemed the Best in Ire­land in their spe­cific skill area. ' To be a par­tic­i­pant in this com­pe­ti­tion is an achieve­ment in it­self as very high stan­dards are ex­pected of the com­peti­tors,' said Tony.

There were five ap­pren­tices com­pet­ing in the Sheet­metal Work sec­tion, in­clud­ing two guest com­peti­tors from the UK, and Mar­cus won this sec­tion out­right, claim­ing two beau­ti­ful tro­phies as well as a par­tic­i­pa­tion cer­tifi­cate and plaque at the award cer­e­mony in the Gre­sham Ho­tel in Dublin.

He will also re­ceive the De­part­ment of Ed­u­ca­tion and Skills Sil­ver Medal Award and it's now pos­si­ble he will be se­lected to rep­re­sent Ire­land at the 42nd WorldSkills com­pe­ti­tion which will take place dur­ing 2013 in Leipzig in Ger­many.

‘As his em­ploy­ers, we at Carnew Iron Crafts are ex­tremely proud of Mar­cus, we are de­lighted for him and con­grat­u­late him on his won­der­ful achieve­ment,' said Tony.
