Tobacco lobby warning
MEP Nessa Childers has welcomed that the European Commission finally proposed the long-awaited tobacco directive but warned of the massive industry lobbying against the law.
‘As co-chair of the MEPs Against Cancer forum in the European Parliament, I have campaigned and pressed for this anti-tobacco legislation for a long time. We must be vigilant against the massive negative industry lobbying campaign which will now move out of the shadows and try to delay, block and defeat this legislation.
‘We know from the last tobacco directive ten years ago, that the industry used many.. tactics to undermine public health campaigners, the then Irish Commissioner David Byrne and the negotiations in the European Parliament for a strong directive. I welcome that the Commission finally proposed this legislation, but.. I am disappointed in the details. It has not proposed mandatory EUwide plain packaging for tobacco products as we wished.’
