Rath­new and New­town United squeeze through to next round of Wicklow Cup

RATH­NEW AND New­town United A lived to tell the tale of their sec­ond round Wicklow Cup clashes at the week­end.

Both clubs have lifted the tro­phy in re­cent sea- sons and they re­main on course to re­peat the trick in May fol­low­ing nar­row vic­to­ries.

New­town United faced the size­able task of tak­ing on Ash­ford Rovers and they were made to work ex­tremely hard to se­cure their place in the third round, even­tu­ally seal­ing a 3-4 win. Dean Od­lum struck a brace for the Mag­pies, with Cathal McNicholas and John Hef­fer­nan both reg­is­ter­ing sin­gles.

United will prob­a­bly be hop­ing to avoid the Vil­lagers un­til the lat­ter stages.

Rath­new set up a pos­si­ble fu­ture ren­dezvous fol­low­ing their 2-1 win over St. Fer­gal's AFC at Sham­rock Park.
