Coolboy handballers brought pride and glory back home

WHAT A year for the Coolboy Handball Club. Four gold and three silver medals from the World Handball Championships and a huge number of competitors wearing their colours.

A total of 32 players represented the small Wicklow village at the championships in Dublin and the amount of fundraising and hard work that went into the organising of the club's participation was stag- gering to say the least.

“It's a great achievement for any club to pick up an award like this,” said Richard Willoughby. “The way we performed in the World Championships was way beyond our expectations and we had 32 players as well,” he added.

Over €5,000 was raised for the club in advance of the competition and some of this money was used to subsidise the juvenile members and to ensure everyone had adequate gear for the event.

It was a tremendous occasion for the club and they flew the county’s flag with pride.
