Magpies call in their big guns

NEWTOWN UNITED A has called in the cavalry as they look to get out over the line in the Andy McEvoy Premier 1 title race.

With a cluster of stars suspended, a Magpies legend has briefly come out of retirement to aid the cause and he immediately paid dividends as he netted in his side’s 4-1 triumph over Wicklow Town A.

Marty Williams also netted a single at the Matt Kelly Memorial Grounds, while the other two strikes came courtesy of Dessie Waters as United took another step towards retaining their crown.

The Newtown men will have to be patient though as this week also saw title rivals Rathnew AFC A and Arklow Town pick up maximum points.

Edwin Walker did his absolute best to derail the Villagers but even his hat-trick could not stop Rathnew from collecting a 3-5 victory at Celtic Park. Rathnew had a hat-trick hero of their own in the form of Mark Doyle, and he was joined on the scoresheet by Jamie Shea and Shane Doyle.

Arklow Town’s challenge this week was provided by pluck Ashford Rovers who always give their opponents trouble. Danny Byrne netted for the visitors at Bridgewater Centre Park but strikes from Mark Nolan and Alan Werder guided the Town to the win.
