A grave situation has reared its head in Arklow with regard to the disposal of items not normally classified as weekly domestic refuse.

With the council ban on collection of non-domestic refuse, some strange items have started appearing in the refuse skip in the local cemetery.

At a council meeting last week, Cllr Tom Clandillon revealed that amongst the items in the skip were a washing machine and a cooker.

He said the situation will worsen because of the imposition of the ban on non-domestic rubbish collections by the council.

He was horrified at seeing a washing machine and a cooker in the graveyard skip.

‘I am appealing to the people responsible for this dumping to stop it,’ he said.

In an attempt to put a stop to this type of dumping, Cllr Clandillon has asked town hall officials to place signs on all skips around town including the one in the cemetery.
