CRIMINAL gangs on the lookout for guns are targeting homes in rural parts of Wicklow.

And gardai say they believe the stolen firearms are making their way back to Dublin for use in organised crime.

A significant amount of burglaries have taken place over the last few weeks in isolated sections of the eastern part of the county and gardai are urging householders to be vigilant.

The common factor in these burglaries is that rifles have been taken from houses stretching from Aughrim up towards the Roundwood area.

‘We are making an appeal to people not to leave their houses vacant,’ says Detective Sergeant Fergus O’Brien.

‘ They are targeting houses in remote areas so people should secure all firearms and be aware of the location of these weapons at all times.’

He also encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity to the Gardai and let them know if any vehicles have been spotted.
