THE Arklow to Carrickmines powerline will not be energised until a report has been completed, according to Minister for Energy, Mr Burke.

Selected ‘relevant’ reports are under review the Minister said in reply to Lady Valerie Goulding. But the protest group SPARKS (Stop Powerlines Across Residences, Kindergartens, Schools) said ‘It is significant that the Minister does not state which international scientists have been appointed to do this report. In fact, the report may already been completed’. ‘It is SPARKS’s belief that, in the light of present knowledge about the health hazards of electromagnetic fields, few reputable scientists would be happy about the siting of this high-voltage powerline close schools and houses.

‘We can only hope that these unknown scientists order the line to be re-routed around the two affected schools and order the ESB to purchase properties where the owners are concerned about the health risks-as happened in Co Clare’.
