NEWTOWN JUNIORS F.C.
We recorded 1 win, 2 draws and two defeats from the five games played by our teams last weekend. One 100% record remained intact while another two went but those teams maintained their unbeaten league starts.
The Under 8’s lost away to a very strong Rathnew side. Scott McKenna scored his first ever goal to register Newtown’s score. Among those who starred were Aidan Heffernan and Jake Robertson.
The Under 9’s played out a humdinger at home to Enniskerry despite losing out on a 3-2 scoreline. Ryan McMahon and an own goal accounted for their scores while Iggy Szpilka and Padraaig Gammell starred on the day.
The Under 10’s were idle but the Under 11’s played out a 3-all draw at home to Roundwood. These were the first points the team had dropped this season in what was a keenly contested encounter. An own goal and a Bobby Dowling brace accounted for the Newtown goals. Among the players that starred were Fionn O’Reilly and goalkeeper Sean Bishop.
Another team that lost their 100% record but maintained their unbeaten start to the league were the Under 13’s who had to battle back on four occasions to come home with a share of the spoils in a 4-all draw away to Arklow Town. The goals were scored by Andrew McMahon (2) and Steven Coghlan (2). The team and everyone in the club would like to extend its best wishes for a speedy recovery to the team’s star defender Conor Kavanagh who suffered an unfortunate injury during the week. Get well soon Conor.
The U-18 girls travelled to Finglas for the usual tough tussle with home side WFTA. At the end of the game that at times was spoiled by a gale force win it was our lassies that came out on top 2-1. The goals came from Una Grogan & a 30 yard screamer from Sinead Horgan gave us a deserved 2 goal lead. A poor offside call from the ref allowed the home side half the deficit and give our girls a few unnecessary tense moments towards the end. On the day Chelsee Snell, Katie Miley, Heather Cullen and Orla Hayes were among those who starred for Newtown.
The following are the fixtures for the week-ending Saturday/ Sunday 13th/14th December: Under 8’s–fixture to be confirmed; Under 9’s at home to Arklow United ko Saturday at 11am; Under 10’s at home to Rathnew F.C. ko Saturday at 11.50am; Under 11’s at home to Avonmore ko Saturday at 12.45pm; Under 13’s away to St. Anthonys ko to be confirmed; Girls U-18’s–fixture to be confirmed (Fixtures & ko times are subject to change)
Two players from the club celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are Jake Robertson from the Under 8’s team and Andrew McMahon from the Under 13’s.
Happy birthday Jake & Andrew from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C. Week 8 of our latest Last Man Standing competition saw three players exit the competition after Spurs registered a blank at home to Crystal Palace. Good luck to the remaining four players as this competition heats up going into an unprecedented ninth week and once again thank you for your continued support.
Also due to time constraints we will not having a Christmas Raffle this year but we are working on a fundraiser that will take place in January. The format of this fundraiser will see us raise monies for the club and also raise money to purchase training tops etc for all players in the club though it will require everybody to contribute and support fully. Further details in the coming weeks.
We are always on the lookout for coaches and committee members to join the club especially to help out in the area of fundraising among other things. For all other queries/matters relating to the club contact Hughie on 087-6987653 or visit our Facebook page.
Finally on a sadder note the club extends their sincere condolences to the Taylor family on the passing of Mary “Pop” Taylor. May her soul rest in peace
