Slated by the critics, and derided by many, it overcame huge obstacles to make number one. EMI, Richard’s record company, refused to release the single, and he took it to indie label Papillon instead. Even then, many radio stations would not play the song. The Millennium Prayer was Cliff’s 14th UK number one and the last of his career to date. It was a charity single and raised over £1 million for Children’s Promise. It stayed at the top for two weeks, but was not 1999’s Christmas Number One, that honour going to Westlife with their pair of covers,‘Seasons In The Sun’ and ’I Have A Dream’.
