A brave have-a-go hero foiled an armed robbery in a packed Blessington pub on Monday night.

Three gunmen in balaclavas stormed into O’Connor’s Lounge and attempted to snatch the proceeds of the local GAA lotto.

However, a local hero, who was drinking at the bar, coolly walked up behind the raiders and struck one of them on the back of the head, forcing him to drop his gun.

All three raiders panicked and fled the scene having grabbed just an empty briefcase.

Arrangements for fundraising draws are set to be reviewed by local clubs following the raid.

The incident took place while Blessington GAA members were counting lotto proceeds in O’Connor’s Lounge at around 11 p.m..

The three armed men were wielding sawn-off shotguns and a handgun as they shouted for the cash – which amounted to around £1,500.

The three men involved in the attempted robbery left the area in a stolen car with blacked out number plates which was recovered in Tallaght later in the week.

The briefcase – which was actually empty when it was snatched – was dumped near the pub.
