On the senior front the first team had no game at the weekend, our second team travelled the short distance to Greystones to take on Greystones United in a local derby in Leinster Senior terms. The lads gained three valuable points in a 4-1 win. Leading scorer Maurice Dunne hit a brace to make it sixteen for the campaign, Mark Delaney and Luke Byrne scored one a piece to get their promotion challenge back on track.

The under 17’s recorded an excellent 4-0 win over local neighbours Wicklow Town at the Whitegates, Fionn Nother nabbed two, a first of the season from Kevin O’Halloran and an own goal accounted for their four goals and into the bargain keeps them on the shirt tails of league leaders Arklow United.

Only two junior games were up for decision on Saturday, the under 12B’s came home from Roundwood with all three points with a fantastic 5-3 win in a thriller. Two goals each from Ben Free and Scott Bushe and one from Lee Hamilton made sure the lads maintain their unbeaten start to the league. The 13B’s went down 2-0 to Greystones Utd in what was an even encounter which the lads were very unlucky not to get something from.

A bit more action on Sunday, the under 8 white came up against a strong Coolboy Rangers team, after a tough game the lads can hold their heads held high as they battled right to the very end. The 9 white team didn’t reach their normal standards but they also gave one hundred percent effort in their game against Greystones Utd, Eoin Kennedy was on the scoresheet.

Our 10A’s were involved in a seven goal thriller with Arklow Town A but unfortunately the lads came out the wrong side of a 4-3 scoreline. Steven Gormley notched his first of the season, Cole Byrne and Sam Culleton nabbed one a piece to bring both their totals to four for the campaign. The 12A’s suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat away to Arklow Town A in their top of the table clash while the 12C’s lost 8-0 to a strong Greystones Utd side.

The 13A’s gained an excellent point in a 1-1 draw with Arklow Town A, Paul Marah found the net for Rovers to make it eleven for the season. Ryan Murphy scored two for the under 14B’s to make it four goals in three games as his team went down 3-2 to Arklow Town in what was an exciting tussle between two evenly matched sides.

The executive committee of Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish the managers, assistant managers, coaches, players, parents and supporters of the club a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. We would also like to wish a Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all the clubs, WDSL committee, WDFL committee, LSL committee, MGL committee, referees, Paul Dowling, Daniel O’Gorman, Brendan Lawrence and all the staff of the Wicklow People.

A reminder to all managers and players, the Christmas raffle tickets should have been returned by now, any outstanding tickets should be returned asap to any committee member as the draw is this coming Saturday the 20th of December in Ernies, many thanks for your continuous support and the best of luck in the draw.

At the time of going to print one of our five remaining participants in Last Man Standing competition was waiting on Everton on Monday night to scoop the €500 prize, it was straight forward, if Everton won the €500 was his. This was due to two people on Southampton and two on West Ham on Saturday been eliminated as both teams failed to win, if Everton didn’t win the prize fund would be divided between the last five people who were left standing.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to congratulate second team player Ciaran McGettigan on his achievement of winning the county minor footballer of the year award, an award well deserved to a dedicated athlete. Well done Ciaran.

As a result of an idea raised at our recent AGM the club are currently looking to obtain a defibrillator, with the help of a club member we have availed of a great opportunity to obtain a defibrillator from a first aid provider. If the club can collect 300 old mobile phones we will be given a defibrillator in exchange for the old phones.

The club would be grateful if people would donate their old unwanted phones to this worthy cause. Anyone interested in donating any old phones can contact any of the following by texting or ringing to organise collection or drop off. Shillelagh Utd 4, Conary Utd 4. A point gained last Sunday morning in a high scoring game. Not our most fluid performance but the lads showed fantastic battling qualities to rescue a point after trailing 4-2 with ten minutes left. Two goals from PJ O’Keeffe, a penalty from Jimmy Behan and an equaliser right at the death from Mark Collins saw us share the spoils with the visitors. The game was our last fixture of 2014 so onwards and upwards in the new year. Tickets are currently on sale for our Christmas draw from committee members and players. As ever your support is greatly appreciated.

Avonmore U-9 green - Another great game for Colm Murphy’s under 9 Avonmore team today! Taylor Hanlon, Leon Bolton and Oisin Kearns were the steadfast back line from kick off. Taylor guards the keeper superbly and is becoming known for his sliding tackles, Leon is a great runner who isn’t afraid to move up to help out in midfield when it’s needed and Oisin will not back down from a tackle.

Ashford were first to score in an evenly matched half and Joseph Jacob and Declan Murphy were keen to keep the ball in Ashford’s half then. Caden Kinsella took advantage of their determination and scored. Jake Hudson came on for Declan and when goalie Jack McDonald got a knock during a goal by Ashford, Noah Fahy stepped in for him ,Matthew Murphy came on for Joseph, while Jamie Townsend Doyle came in for Oisin just before half-time. With laces tied and the team talk done, the lads came back on and this was surely Avonmore’s half. They had try after try by Caden, Joseph, Caden , Matthew, Caden and Jake with Leon even coming up to the box to help out. The ball just would not go in!!!!! Declan had a few saves this half and Jack got a great header in to deflect the ball. Noah and Jamie were always ready to pass the ball up the pitch. With a few minutes to go, after all their hard work it was looking like a loss but Jake was having none of it. He scored and the whistle went a minute later.

A great little team with a lot of promise. The lads are on a well deserved break now for Christmas and will be back training and working off those selection boxes in January!

Avonmore U-9’s yellow - No match for this team this week but the managers Dave and Sharon would like to say thanks for all the hard work these brilliant eight players have put in over the last couple of months.

This team shows great determination and dedication at each training session and match day. They are a great little team. Thanks to Maggie for being chief money collector and to everyone who helps out each week. Hope everyone has a great Christmas and hope to see you all again in the new year.
