Eden Gate apartment gutted in suspected arson incident

Bray People - - NEWS -

A FIRE which occurred at Eden Gate in Delgany in the early hours of Monday morning is being treated as suspicious.

One man was in the ground floor apartment at Priory Drive when the blaze broke out.

The fire started somewhere between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The non-Irish middle-aged man is the only resident of the home.

He saw a glow outside on his balcony area, and raised the alarm.

There was graffiti daubed on the exterior wall however gardai said they do not yet know when that occurred or if it is linked to the fire.

The apartment was badly damaged with some damage to another unit, however members of the fire service were on site quickly and managed to contain the fire before it spread further.

The houses nearby were evacuated and the scene sealed off for forensic examination.

Superintendent Pat Ward said that the case is under investigation.

He said that if it was arson rather than accidental, the incident was ‘reckless in the extreme,’ as any fire in an apartment building means the blaze could spread to all of the other homes.

Nobody was injured in the incident.

If anyone has information regarding the fire they are urged to contact Greystones Garda Station on (01) 6665800 or the garda confidential line on 1800 666 111.
