The annual Calary Christmas football game passed without any serious incidents this year, although goalie Jasper O Toole had to retire early with a sore pinkie.

This Christmas tradition has been on the go for over 50 years and allows neighbours from Calary and the Red Lane to settle a few scores for the past year.

This year saw the return of Josephine O’Toole and her family who were home from Kent for Christmas. Her husband Scott threw himself into the action and notched up two kicks of the ball during the whole game. It took him a while to get the message that we can handle the ball in Ireland, but he was patiently encouraged and coached by team mates Terry and Martin O Toole and Alan Fox. Des Fox junior got the winning goal, so everyone on his team enjoys the right of having the losing team reverse for them if they meet on the road, during 2015. As local resident Mildred Fox pointed out, long may this lovely tradition last but not sure if she means the match or the giving way on the road bit!
