MONICA MACDONALD graduated from the Northern Ireland College of Podiatry in 1989.
She began her career in the NHS in Milton Keynes, where she worked for 13 years before coming to Wicklow 14 years ago to take over the practice formerly owned by the late Pat Egan.
During Monica’s career in the UK, she worked in many clinical settings. She was responsible for the assessment, treatment plan and provision of care of acute/at risk patients in the Diabetes Department at Milton Keynes Hospital. Her specialist podiatry work also involved her in the running of the Rheumatology/ Rehabilitation Clinic. In Milton Keynes, Monica was responsible for the Foot Health programme, delivering lectures to other health care professionals and mother and baby groups. A particular highlight of Monica’s career was that of teaching the podiatry students on placement from Northampton College of Podiatry after she gained her Further and Adult Teaching Certificate.
She takes the increase in the incidence of skin cancer very seriously and monitors her patient’s lesions very carefully. If there is any perceived risk of malignancy, she immediately sends them to their GP.
The surgery offers a wide range of treatments, including routine nail and footcare; nail surgery; electrosurgery; biomechanics and provision of insoles/orthotics.
The care of patients who have diabetes or other illnesses which place them at risk is provided by Monica. Patients over 65 years who hold a chiropody card or have a full medical card are currently entitled to 4 treatments per year. Medical card holders under 65 years may qualify for treatment in certain circumstances, eg: diabetes patients.
