MON­ICA MACDON­ALD grad­u­ated from the North­ern Ire­land Col­lege of Po­di­a­try in 1989.

She be­gan her ca­reer in the NHS in Mil­ton Keynes, where she worked for 13 years be­fore com­ing to Wick­low 14 years ago to take over the prac­tice for­merly owned by the late Pat Egan.

Dur­ing Mon­ica’s ca­reer in the UK, she worked in many clin­i­cal set­tings. She was re­spon­si­ble for the as­sess­ment, treat­ment plan and pro­vi­sion of care of acute/at risk pa­tients in the Di­a­betes De­part­ment at Mil­ton Keynes Hos­pi­tal. Her spe­cial­ist po­di­a­try work also in­volved her in the run­ning of the Rheuma­tol­ogy/ Re­ha­bil­i­ta­tion Clinic. In Mil­ton Keynes, Mon­ica was re­spon­si­ble for the Foot Health pro­gramme, de­liv­er­ing lec­tures to other health care pro­fes­sion­als and mother and baby groups. A par­tic­u­lar high­light of Mon­ica’s ca­reer was that of teach­ing the po­di­a­try stu­dents on place­ment from Northamp­ton Col­lege of Po­di­a­try af­ter she gained her Fur­ther and Adult Teach­ing Cer­tifi­cate.

She takes the in­crease in the in­ci­dence of skin cancer very se­ri­ously and mon­i­tors her pa­tient’s le­sions very care­fully. If there is any per­ceived risk of ma­lig­nancy, she im­me­di­ately sends them to their GP.

The surgery of­fers a wide range of treat­ments, in­clud­ing rou­tine nail and foot­care; nail surgery; elec­tro­surgery; biome­chan­ics and pro­vi­sion of in­soles/or­thotics.

The care of pa­tients who have di­a­betes or other ill­nesses which place them at risk is pro­vided by Mon­ica. Pa­tients over 65 years who hold a chi­ropody card or have a full med­i­cal card are cur­rently en­ti­tled to 4 treat­ments per year. Med­i­cal card hold­ers un­der 65 years may qual­ify for treat­ment in cer­tain cir­cum­stances, eg: di­a­betes pa­tients.
