Heartbreak at loss of an angel
The people of Bray learned almost three years ago that a little girl needed their help.
Merryn Lacy’s dad Mick is from Mountainview Drive in Bray, her mum Jenny is from Derry, and the family lives in Donabate.
Those three communities never gave up fighting to give her the best possible chance.
Merryn Lacy captured the hearts of the people of the town of Bray, as well as celebrities all over the world, from Colin Farrell to Damien Duff, local and Irish sports teams, Katie Taylor, and Bray based singer-songwriter Robbie Doyle. As fundraising activities gathered pace, and Merryn was able to attend many of them and became a local a celebrity in her own right. Her beautiful smile even brought out the best in Roy Keane.
Merryn, like many children her age, was a big fan of Minecraft, as well as Ed Sheeran, and drawing.
The public celebrated the joys of her life, such as her first day at school, birthdays, and other happy times, along with her parents Mick and Jenny and her sister Cora. They also shared their pain, commiserating on the hard days, and offering emotional as well as financial support.
When news broke last week that Merryn had lost her battle, there was a huge outpouring of grief and sympathy for the Lacy family.
Hundreds upon hundreds of people took to social media to express their condolences. ‘We are really touched by all your kind words,’ responded her family. ‘Seeing the impact this little girl from Dublin has had on the world fills us with pride.’
‘I honestly have never had a person take such an effect on me,’ said musician Robbie Doyle, who held a music night in aid of the Merryn Lacy Trust in December 2013.‘Words cannot describe the sadness, hurt and pain I feel right now after learning of the news of this little angel who I had such a soft spot and love in my heart for. That night when Merryn walked into my life she lit up the whole room. It was so easy to see what a special gift of a little girl she was.’
Events held over the past years have included everything from coffee mornings and cake sales, to a concert with Aslan’s Christy Dignam headlining, people doing the mini marathon and Hell and Back for Merryn, and much more.
