Fur­ther suc­cess for Luke Byrne in Tran­si­tion Year, who won the In­no­va­tion Award at the re­cent PDST ‘Get Up and Go’ Na­tional Fi­nal, with his prod­uct ‘Head­phone Helpers’. Well done, Luke!


Best wishes to the CCA play­ers who are tak­ing to the stage in the Rook’s Tower in New­cas­tle tonight (Wed­nes­day), Thurs­day and Fri­day with this year’s pro­duc­tion of ‘Sive’. This Year the CCA play­ers will take you back to a time when love was bought and sold. ‘Sive’ tells the story of a beau­ti­ful girl and her wicked step aunt – Mena, who is try­ing to force her niece into mar­riage. Will Mena get her wish or will jus­tice pre­vail? Per­for­mances run from the Tick­ets are five Euro and are avail­able from the school.


Well done to Laoise Cullen in Tran­si­tion Year who won first prize in the Ham­mer and Dis­cus at a re­cent sport­ing event. Laoise is now through to the Le­in­ster com­pe­ti­tion on May 14. Best of luck Laoise.


Con­grat­u­la­tions to Troy Scully in third year who one a bronze medal in the 3,000m race last week. Troy will be com­pet­ing again on May 14.


Well done to ev­ery­one who took part in Sports Day. Thank­fully the rain held off to al­low us to en­joy a fun-filled day of sport and other ac­tiv­i­ties. This day is one of the high­lights of the school cal­en­dar. There were a huge va­ri­ety of events and ac­tiv­i­ties tak­ing place for stu­dents, from the long puc, the three legged race, tag rugby, high jump, penalty kick and a bas­ket­ball shoot-out to soc­cer sixes and athletics and a very hotly-con­tested 100m, 400m and 1500m race. The whole school com­mu­nity re­ally en­joyed the chance to spend the day to­gether as a group. Many thanks to the PE Depart­ment and all the teach­ers, staff and par­ents who helped out on the day.


As part of the Health Pro­mo­tion Pro­gramme in the school, the HPS team are cur­rently high­light­ing to both staff and stu­dents the im­por­tance of well­be­ing in the school. Each week, a pos­i­tive quote is sent to all tu­tor groups fol­lowed by a short breath­ing ex­er­cise that fo­cusses on a par­tic­u­lar as­pect of well­be­ing. The PE hall is open ev­ery Wed­nes­day morn­ing at 8.40 a.m. and on Thurs­day morn­ings the Med­i­ta­tion Room will be open for sixth years at 8.45 a.m. The PE Hall is open ev­ery lunchtime and all ac­tiv­i­ties are open for staff and stu­dents.


Par­ents in the school have re­cently be­gun a com­mu­nity based Al­co­hol and Drug pro­gramme, which will run for 6 weeks.

Dur­ing these ses­sions, par­ents will get new in­for­ma­tion, learn new skills, use prac­ti­cal so­lu­tions, talk to other par­ents and Com­mu­nity Aware­ness of Drugs (CAD) tu­tors and ac­quire skills to teach chil­dren to make healthy choices.


The next few weeks are a busy time of year at Coláiste Chraobh Ab­hann, with many im­por­tant end-of-year events tak­ing place, in­clud­ing on Fri­day, May 20, the an­nual Ju­nior and Se­nior Prize giv­ing cer­e­monies. The whole school com­mu­nity and in­vited guests will take time to recog­nise the hard work and great ef­forts of our stu­dents. Se­nior and ju­nior stu­dents are recog­nised for their con­tri­bu­tions to the school and our com­mu­nity in a wide va­ri­ety of prizes, in­clud­ing aca­demic, sport­ing, lead­er­ship, en­trepreneur­ship, civic, cul­tural, mu­si­cal and artis­tic cat­e­gories. Stu­dents will be awarded aca­demic prizes in each sub­ject area, with a num­ber of Sixth year stu­dents re­ceiv­ing per­pet­ual awards for sub­jects stud­ied in their Leav­ing Cer­tifi­cate year. Sport­ing awards will cover many team and in­di­vid­ual ef­forts from camo­gie, soc­cer and hurl­ing to bas­ket­ball and athletics.


A group of our TY stu­dents en­joyed a unique cul­tural ex­pe­ri­ence last week as they trav­elled to Wurzburg, Ger­many, with two of their teach­ers, to visit our part­ner school, the Reim­schnei­der Gym­na­sium. Stu­dents spent time with their Ger­man coun­ter­parts, at­tend­ing school and also vis­it­ing Wurzburg and its sur­round­ing area on this so­cial and cul­tural ex­change. The Ger­man teach­ers and stu­dents vis­ited our school last term. Many thanks to Mr Kennedy and Ms Buck­ley for their work in co­or­di­nat­ing the ex­change and ac­com­pa­ny­ing the stu­dents on the trip.


Stu­dents are re­vis­ing and pre­par­ing for the end of year house ex­am­i­na­tions, which will start on Mon­day, May 30. We wish all our first, sec­ond, TY and fifth year stu­dents well in their ex­ams. Thanks to them and their teach­ers for their hard work this term and through­out the year.
