There is so much that cannot be revealed about this instalment of the retro gangster drama that any preview risks becoming a giant spoiler punishable by a visit from Shelby henchmen.

No surprise, though, that Cillian Murphy is again on genuinely unnerving form tonight as Tommy moves ever closer to Reservoir Dogs territory.

He is set on a path of deadly vengeance that threatens to splinter the family.

Linda implores an increasingly guilty Arthur to give up the criminal life.
