Minors come up just short

Super squad beaten late

- DOMINIC LEECH

WICKLOW ladies Minor squad travelled the short distance to St Laurence’s in Kildare to play their Leinster Minor B semi final.

These teams had met in the round robin series with Wicklow suffering a loss and after 10 minutes the writing seemed on the wall as the garden county trailed 2-8 to 0-2.

But Wicklow were not in the mood for giving up and driven on by Carnew’s Ella Doran who scored a vital goal and with a huge defensive improvement the half time score read Wicklow 1-7 Kildare 2-9.

However, the first half was only a taster for the second half as both sides went to battle and in a welter of excitement both sides traded scores.

As the full time approached the sides were level but in injury time Kildare broke wicklow hearts with a point to leave the final score Kildare 3-14 (23) to Wicklow 2-16 (22).

A massive congratulations on the teams display and on the entire performance by all the players and management in match that kept all the spectators on the edge of their seats.

Best wishes to Kildare on their victory today and we wish them well in the ‘B’ final.

Wicklow now go on to contest the Leinster Minor ‘C’ Championship final against either Meath or Carlow.

Scorers for Wicklow ; Katie Miley 1-5, Niamh O’Brien 0-8, Ella Doran 1-0, Marie kealy 0-3.

Well done also to our Under-14 squad and mentors who travelled to PorlLaoise to play in the All-Ireland Under-14 blitz and gave a fantastic display of football, although not qualifying for the final.
