The seniors took on Baltinglass last Friday in the league and unfortunately lost the game. However the team was weakened due to injuries and availability of players due to a local wedding hopefully the team will be back to full strength for the next game in two weeks time.

The under-eight to under-10s played two blitzes last week, on Monday they went to Kilcoole and on Friday they travelled over to Kilmac to take part in a GO games blitz under the new format. Well done to both clubs for going ahead with the games despite the inclement weather, their next outing is an all county blitz and it’s on in Ballinakill on Saturday, June 11. Training for these two teams is on every Tuesday at 6.30 p.m. and every Friday at 6.30 p.m. Coaching for the hurling takes place every Saturday at 11.15 a.m. and we are getting quite a good turnout however new faces are welcome to join us at any stage. The under-12s have only been beaten once and they played Barndarrig on Monday in a top of the table clash.

The under-eight to under-10 girls are training tonight Wednesday and every Wednesday at 6.30 p.m. on the pitch. Please note change of time from six to 6.30 p.m., they are now also training on Saturdays at 12 in the pitch. Their next blitz is on June 4

The under-14 girls were beaten by Eire Og in the league and their next match is at home to St Nicholas on June 9. The under-16 girls are taking a break due to the exams and have no match for a few weeks.

We are coming to the business end of the season where every point gained is so precious towards the ultimate goal. Our under-10s travelled to Tullylusk to take on Avonmore and came home with a hard earned 5-2 success. Mason Melia scored a treble and there were singles for Keira Farrelly and Jack Coughlan. On the day the best were Aaron Hackett, Eoghan Fox and Patrick Martin.

The under-11s turned their attention to league matters with two important fixtures this past week. On Tuesday evening they hosted Wicklow Town and at half time in this game the game was scoreless. Mason Melia opened the scoring early in the second half and from there the Newtown team were lethal in front of goal scoring five more goals. Melia scored his second and he was joined by Ryan Clarke, Martin Kelly, Grace Murphy and Ryan McMahon in the scoring enclosure. On the night Bogdan Rusu in goal, Shane Synnott and Marcel Kocajda were among the better players on the night.

Then it was onto Sunday morning and a winners take all clash away to St Anthony’s. Things didn’t look good at half time when we found ourselves 2-nil down but this team showed they were going to give it their all and they fought back to score two fine goals from Darragh Heffernan and Mason Melia. The game was end to end and among the players who starred were Ryan Clarke in goal and Ryan McMahon, as the two teams shared the spoils. It will now take a play off to decide who wins the league title. Funnily this game was a carbon copy of the first league game between the two teams but on that occasion Newtown had a 2-0 lead and Anto’s came back to draw the game.

The under-12s collected a point from their trip to Roundwood FC in a 1-1 draw. Bobby Dowling scored the Newtown goal and this result moves the 12’s to the top of the Shield standings. One negative from the game was an injury to Luke Breen, which has put him on the sidelines for the next few weeks.

Another team counting down the days to their cup final are the under-14s and they completed their Shield programme with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Wicklow Rovers under-13s. This was a much improved team display of late and Andrew Waters scored the Newtown goal.

The ladies’ team after their brilliant success last week went into FAI Cup action with a home game against Leixlip Utd. We were down to the bare bones for this game due to studying and work commitments but the team despite a 5-3 reverse left all they had on the pitch.

Things didn’t look good as we found ourselves 2-0 down after 10 minutes but this team is full of spirit and after a half hour the game was level after two fine strikes from Ailish Kelly after excellent moves involving Amy Guilfoyle, Mel Clarke and Abbie Molloy. Just before half time Leixlip restored their lead to go in at the break 3-2 up.

The goal of the game was scored early in the second half when Molloy scored a brilliant solo goal. The game was now end to end but it was Leixlip who stole a march scoring twice to run out 5-3 winners to advance to the next round. In fairness our girls gave it their all and there were many good performances and among them were Avril O’Toole, Mags Synnott and Annmarie Manning.

We now go into a break for exams before we hopefully we set out on the Summer League. This year on the back of our exploits in the past year we will be in the top division. We will need a commitment from the players in this division with regards training etc, if its not forthcoming then we may have problems but that’s for another day.

The fixtures are as follows for the period Wednesday, May 25, to Sunday, May 29: under-11s away to Rathnew FC ko Wednesday at 6.45 p.m.; under-10s – Fixture to be confirmed; under-11s away to Aughrim Rangers ko to be confirmed; under-12s vs Wicklow Rovers ‘B’ ko Saturday at 3.15 p.m. (Cup Final), venue: Woodlands Greystones; under-14s vs Roundwood F.C. ko Saturday at 1.30 p.m. (Cup Final), venue: Woodlands Greystones; under-15 Girls – No Fixture; Ladies’ team – No Fixture (KO times and dates are subject to change)

Our latest ‘Golden Goal’ competition was the FA Cup Final between Manchester United and Crystal Palace and the winning minute was the 78th minute. There is €20 for the holders of the tickets marked 77th and 79th minutes. Thank you everyone for your support. We have a competition for the Champions League Final and tickets can be purchased from any committee member. Please support.
