Key stakeholders discuss making Wicklow a prime location for enterprise
LAST Tuesday leading local and national business people were invited to join in the drive for further economic development and job creation in County Wicklow.
As part of its ongoing commitment to economic development, Wicklow County Council hosted a Breakfast Briefing and Workshop attended by key business stakeholders.
The theme of the event, which was held in the Druids Glen Hotel and Golf Resort, was ‘Making County Wicklow the best location in Ireland for industry and enterprise’.
This is linked to a strategy to ‘Engage with the county’s business leaders to identify what the council can do to support and grow enterprise in the county’.
The key objectives were: determine what level and type of development engagement and support business requires from the council; determine the critical areas for business that are within the control of the council and identify the key issues; and explore how the council can improve these areas and discuss how industry and enterprise can best support economic development in the county.
Bryan Doyle, Wicklow County Council Chief Executive, said: ‘I believe that Wicklow’s location adjacent to Dublin with its natural, infrastructure, maritime and community assets, is ideally placed to ensure that it will become the best location in Ireland for industry and enterprise.’
He said that the contribution and forthright views of the invited business people would be invaluable in defining the outputs from the workshop. ‘ The council looks forward to working in partnership with you to deliver on the key objectives,’ he said.
Cllr John Ryan, Cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council, said: ‘We are delighted with the level of engagement seen last Tuesday. It’s all about building relationships and we can tap into huge potential by working together.’
He said that it was clear from the event that the business community needs a direct line into the council as well as access to key decision makers.
The morning began with a welcome address from Cllr Ryan. Mr Doyle then gave an overview of the economic role and vision for the future of the county. This was followed by an address from Tom Melody, General Manager at Kerry Foods in Shillelagh. Guests then participated in a workshop on the key objectives chaired by the Cathaoirleach after which presentations from the workshop were discussed.
