Christopher Nolan’s fondness for playing tricks on audiences comes centre stage in this story of theatrical magic.

Telling of two rival Victorian conjurers (Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale) - obsessed with creating the best stage illusion, they engage in competitive one-upmanship with tragic results - the film puts on a clever show with a few dazzling flourishes, plus an appearance by David Bowie.

The movie also stars Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, Rebecca Hall and Andy Serkis.

The 2006 mystery thriller is from a screenplay adapted by Nolan and his brother Jonathan from Christopher Priest’s 1995 World Fantasy Award-winning novel of the same name.
