1916 GAR­DEN

Rath­drum Com­mem­o­ra­tion Gar­den will be of­fi­cially opened on Wed­nes­day, June 22, at 6 p.m. The Gar­den has had ex­tra land­scap­ing and is a very at­trac­tive ad­di­tion to the Park. Lo­cated close to the Parnell Mon­u­ment there is no doubt that Parnell would ap­prove of hon­our­ing the peo­ple of 1916.

The open­ing will be car­ried out by Rossa O’Bri­ain, a close re­la­tion of Ea­mon Ceannt who was one of the sig­na­tures of the Procla­ma­tion of 1916. This event is co­in­cid­ing with the meet­ing of Co. Wick­low Mu­nic­i­pal Coun­cil which will take place in the RDA. Hall, Rath­drum.

Due to un­fore­seen cir­cum­stances the Fun Day which was to take place at St Colman’s Hos­pi­tal last Sun­day had to be can­celled. The Pa­tients Ben­e­fit com­mit­tee ex­tend their apolo­gies for any in­con­ve­nience caused. The Mon­ster Draw did take place un­der the su­per­vi­sion of Fr Fran­cis, As­sis­tant Di­rec­tor of Nurs­ing May Ka­vanagh and Sea­mus O’Toole, Joint Trea­surer of the Pa­tients com­mit­tee.

Wick­low Vin­tage Club by kind per­mis­sion of Rath­drum Rugby club are proud to present the Han­nah O’Byrne Memo­rial Show and Fun Day on Sun­day, June 12, start­ing at mid­day in Rath­drum Rugby Grounds. The list of events in­clude car boot sale, Bonny Baby Show, Bot­tle Stall, Wheel-of-For­tune, Hid­den Trea­sure, Cake Sale, etc. A Raf­fle will also take place on the day. All Vin­tage Clas­sic Cars, Trucks, Trac­tors, Mo­tor Cy­cles wel­come. En­try by do­na­tion at the Gate in aid of Rath­drum Cancer Sup­port Group and Friends of Wick­low Com­mu­nity Care. This will be a big day of fun and games for all the fam­ily.

Last week’s meet­ing of Rath­drum Devel­op­ment As­so­ci­a­tion passed a vote of sym­pa­thy to the hus­band, fam­ily and friends of May Bat­tle who passed away re­cently.


In the fi­nal Lec­ture of the 1916 se­ries Rath­drum His­tor­i­cal So­ci­ety will present a Lec­ture by An­gus Mitchell, the renowned bi­og­ra­pher of Sir Roger Case­ment (who has a fam­ily con­nec­tion in Croneroe, Ash­ford, now Bel-Air Ho­tel).

In this Lec­ture his­to­rian An­gus Mitchell will seek to ex­plain some of the un­der­ly­ing con­tra­dic­tions distin­guish­ing Case­ment the man from Case­ment the myth. The Lec­ture will take place in Avon­dale Com­mu­nity Col­lege on Mon­day, June 13, at 8 p.m. and all are wel­come.


An Ec­u­meni­cal Walk will take place on Sun­day, June 26, along

The Tony Mur­phy golf clas­sic in aid of St Colman’s Res­i­den­tial Care Cen­tre, Rath­drum will take place on 24th, June 25 and 26 in Glen­malure Golf Club. This year will be GUI and non-GUI and Ladies cat­e­gories and com­pe­ti­tion is Sin­gle Stable­ford. There will be prizes for Near­est the Pin on all Par three Holes and the Long­est Drive, Ladies and Men. Pre­sen­ta­tion will take place in the club­house on Sun­day night, June 26, with Mu­sic and Raf­fle. All sup­port will be very wel­come.


Over 50 par­tic­i­pants were fas­ci­nated last week by the scenery from Downs Hill over­look­ing Kilped­der. They were tak­ing part with the Rath­drum Walk­ers which had views as far away as Mourne Moun­tains.

This week the Group will bee at the Shay El­liott Memo­rial from which they will take on Kiri­kee Moun­tains. There are ex­tra­or­di­nary views right around the route. Meet­ing points Rath­drum Memo­rial Park 7 p.m. and Shay El­liott car park 7.20 p.m.


This year Rath­drum Gym­nas­tics Club will run their usual tram­po­line camps and gym­nas­tics camps. Each will run for one week in July. These camps will run from July 4 to July 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tram­po­line camp STRICTLY 6+ When these camps are full will can add an­other week start­ing on July 18. Cost is €100 (€85 for club mem­bers) per per­son per week with a re­duc­tion for sec­ond and sub­se­quent broth­ers/sis­ters.

LIT­TLE PEO­PLE CAMPS: The Lit­tle Peo­ple gym­nas­tics camps will run on the same dates, July 4 to July 11; these are for 3-fiveyear-olds only with a max­i­mum of six chil­dren per coach. Class times 10 a.m.-mid­day. Cost is €65 per per­son per week (€55 for club mem­bers)
