NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC
Our teams are winding down at the moment and if there still playing its because they are involved in the handing out of honours at the end of the season. Two massive games were played in the past week.
Firstly our under-12s headed to Kilcoole on Thursday evening to try and add the Shield to the League and Cup they had already won. Their opponents were Roundwood and for the next 90 minutes both teams served up a feast of football for the watching spectators. After extra time the game finished 3-3 with all the goals scored in a pulsating first half. Newtown’s goals came from Bobby Dowling, Fionn O’Reilly (pen) and Darragh Heffernan.
In the second half and ET both defences were on top. It was into penalties we went and Roundwood secured the trophy after they scored three of their first four penalties while unfortunately for Newtown they missed three of their five spot kicks. Congratulations go to Roundwood on their win as there is never more than a kick of a ball between the two teams. It was hard luck to our team on the night but they had a fantastic season so well to them and their management and all their supporters.
Our under-11s travelled to Rathdrum to take on St Anthony’s on Saturday morning for the Division one league title. This was a tight affair throughout and it was Anto’s who struck first with a goal halfway through the first half. Newtown had their chances as well but found the Kilcoole keeper in excellent form.
In the second half Newtown came flying out of the traps and were finding inroads into the Kilcoole defence and it was no surprise that they equalised when Martin Kelly smashed the ball to the net after a move involving Darragh Heffernan and Mason Melia. Minutes later the same trio were involved in the goal that put Newtown ahead when after shots by Melia and Heffernan were blocked Kelly tapped to the net for his second of the match. Five minutes later Melia scored the goal his display deserved and it was a reward for his perseverance after his initial shot was blocked. Anto’s came back at Newtown strongly but Newtown defended well as a team and keeper Ryan Clarke pulled off a couple of excellent saves. Anto’s scored a consolation goal right on full time but the title deservedly heads back to Newtown after an unbeaten season.
Well done to the squad that included Ryan Clarke, Shane Synnott, Marcel Kocajda, Martin Kelly, Darragh Heffernan, Grace Murphy, Mason Melia, Jack Coughlan, Bogdan Rusu, Oran Lane and Ryan McMahon. Also well done to the management duo of Liam McCann and Mick Lane and many thanks to all the support on the day and throughout the season.
The team have one and hopefully two important matches left in their season and the first is this coming Tuesday when they travel to Rathnew to take on Wicklow Rovers ‘A’ in a play off for the right to meet St Anthony’s in the Shield final next weekend. Kick off on Tuesday night is 7 p.m. Good luck everybody. Both our Development Squad and Academy teams played games during the week against Wolfe Tone and Wicklow Rovers and I am glad to report that loads of goals and saves were on view. We send our best wishes to the Wicklow Rovers player who suffered a head injury on Wednesday evening and we are glad to report the player is ok and back home.
