Sam’s Bloom award
BRAY MAN ON TEAM TO GET A COMMENDED AWARD FOR THEIR GARDEN AT FESTIVAL
SAM Shaw from Bray who is a student on the Horticulture Course in National Learning Network’s Park House in Stillorgan was part of a team that received a Commended Award in this year’s Bloom Festival in the Postcard Garden category.
Sam was one of a small group of students who took part in the project to create a 2m x 3m garden. The theme they chose was 1916-2016: Cultivation of a Dream.
Sam said he loved being involved with the making of the crooked fence, in particular, which he found a great experience.
He also said he enjoyed meeting the thousands of new people at Bloom who have the same interest in horticulture, as he does himself.
Philip Doyle from Blackrock explained the inspiration for their theme.
‘ Through the 1916 commemorations we learned about Tim Finn who had a complicated journey from being an Irish Rebel hidden in the tunnel on the former grounds our training centre in Stillorgan, the home of the centre’s horticulture department,’ he said.
‘We also wanted to symbolise our nation’s path of significant events during a delicate process of recovery and renewal.
‘We also included the horticultural representation of the cultivation of a dream that has led to a country experiencing a blossoming, yet still requiring nurturing.’
Ann O Sullivan, Horticulture Instructor said: ‘ The students have worked tirelessly over the past number of months, putting this garden together. They did this work alongside their coursework.
‘ Their dedication, creativity and hard work has paid off.
‘ The garden was very well received by the general public.
National Learning Network is one of 50 centres around the country which provides a range of flexible training programmes and support services for people who need specialist support ( job seekers, unemployed, people with an illness or disability).
