PENNY Dreadful season 4 will not proceed, the show’s makers Showtime have announced, leaving a vacancy in the Ardmore Studios schedule.

The programme starring Eva Green and Josh Hartnett has been based partly in Bray for location and production facilities over the course of the past three years.

While it has been one of the studio’s bankable assets over its run, Ardmore survived the end of The Tudors some years ago, when King Henry dispatched the last of his wives.

Green and Hartnett starred as star-crossed lovers Vanessa Ives and Ethan Chandler, with other notable cast members including Timothy Dalton, Billie Piper, Rory Kinnear and Sarah Greene. The drama became much loved for its interesting mix of characters, drawn from 19th century fiction, and expertly reconstructed Victorian London setting.

Star Eva Green said in a behind-the-scenes clip that she will miss her character. She said that it will be difficult for her to leave Vanessa behind. Green said that her character, who had struggled between light and darkness, deserved to go to the light. For a character to go to the light after struggling with evil serves as a very strong ending for her character.

Show creator John Logan reportedly made a decision some time ago about where the story would be left.

‘We knew where it was going and how we wanted to end it. It seemed to be the only place it could end,’ said Logan in a video released by Showtime.
