County bird race in Bray

Bray People - - NEWS -

THE ANNUAL Wicklow County Bird Race will start at the car park by the Star Amusements in Bray on Saturday, February 18, at 7 p.m.

The race will finish at 6.45 p.m. at The Beehive, off the N11 south of rathnew.

There will be teams of three to four people per car at €5 per person to cover costs. Proceeds will go to BirdWatch Ireland.

The objective is to record as many species as possible in one day within the County Wicklow boundaries.

In order to encourage participants of all levels of skill and ability to take part, teams will be allocated at their request into experienced or beginners/improvers groups.

CThere are prizes to be won for the teams in each category with the highest number of species recorded. Bird racing is great craic and a good way to start off the new birding year. Furthermore, records from the day will be compiled and entered into the BirdTrack database.

A species must be seen by at least three team members to count as one point. If at least three team members hear a species, it counts as half a point.

‘ There are a number of other rules, but the most important one is perhaps “the race is just a bit of fun and anyone taking it seriously will be eliminated!”.’
