Two refugees who stowed away on a foreign ship arrived at Wicklow Harbour on Monday night and were promptly arrested by Gardai.

In what is believed to be the first such incident in Wicklow town, the Moroccan men came ashore having arrived on board a cargo ship. However, the ship’s crew had alerted the authorities in this country, via the shipping insurance company, and Gardai arrested the stow aways in Wicklow.

They were then escorted to Dublin Airport and flown to Germany. It is thought that staff from the Moroccan Embassy in Germany, which is the nearest such embassy to Dublin, came over to Ireland to bring them back and that the two men will eventually be repatriated to Morocco.
