SLEDGE HAMMER yielding criminals used precision timing to smash their way through steel doors in a daring raid on Ashford Co-op last week.

But their efforts were in vain as the local KG Security van arrived on the scene, forcing the culprits to flee.

However, they had stocked up equipment worth £10,000 which they were just about to pick-up before the arrival of the security van.

Gardai believe the attempted robbery, which would have been one of the biggest ever recorded in the area, was carried out by a team of professionals.

They first disconnected the direct alarm link to the Gardai by cutting an outside wire but the rest of their operation had to be very slick.

They could not neutralise the internal alarm which left them with just one minute to smash through the heavy security doors which they broke down from the frames.

The inside alarm had just started to ring when the KG man arrived.

The raiders fled through fields at the back of the premises.

While the raiders failed to get away with any valuable property, they did cause thousands of pounds worth of damages to the premises.
