THE proposed extension of the DART rail service to Greystones is set to be included in the final recommendations to Government by the Dublin Transport Initiative (DTI) study group.

But while the scheme is amongst the projects listed in a draft final report of the DTI, which was leaked this week, a leading local campaigner has warned against complacency about the matter.

‘ The real fight for DART will come when the DTI’s report is submitted to Government, because the fact is that we are included in a programme along with a number of other projects for which there simply isn’t enough money,’ said Cllr George Jones.

A DTI Local Authority Members Committee member, Cllr Jones said that Greystones’ proposed £7 million DART extension is included in a £28 million series of suburban rail proposals for which only £20 million was provided.

‘Although the DART project has the support of both the DTI and Iarnrod Eireann, every effort will have to be made to ensure that it doesn’t fall,’ he said.
