Landlords letting flats ‘in primitive conditions’
UNSCRUPULOUS landlords around Wicklow are forcing tenants to live in primitive conditions.
So says a Labour member of Wicklow County Council, who said that those on waiting lists for housing by the local authority were entitled to expect a decent standard of accommodation from their private landlords.
Cllr Jimmy O’Shaughnessy said that some landlords didn’t seem to care – and were renting out flats to people in which the conditions were ‘primitive’.
He said that the county council had a responsibility in the area, and urged that they carry out an examination of the landlord situation around the county.
He told the county council that there were a sizable number of people around the county living in private rented flats funded by the health board.
‘People are letting out flats in very primitive conditions and getting good money for it. We have to look at the conditions that people have to live in,’ he said.
However, senior executive officer of the housing department with the council Des O’Brien told Councillor O’Shaughnessy that they did not have any control over ensuring that people were living in decent accommodation.
