Newcourt School students’ new mosaic at front door
JSCP students at Newcourt School created a new mosaic at the front entrance recently, with the help of artist Greg Murray.
Greg has done work with Newcourt before and has also carried out similar projects in other schools. He said that the group he worked with are a great bunch. ‘ They were a real joy to work with,’ said Greg. Teacher Carmel Nugent asked Greg to get involved and he was delighted to be involved in the project.
They all decided that it would be nice to put the piece of art at the front of the building.
‘It was a big enough job for them to take on board,’ said Greg. He explained that the mosaic would have to be of a certain standard to survive a certain amount of weathering. The school logo includes three symbols, a heart for respect, a flower for potential and the sun for the environment. These three items were all included in the design of the mosaic.
Greg said that Newcourt School had done one before. Since the school expanded, that piece is now part of an atrium inside the building.
The group decided to create three big panels on the side, at the entrance, each one incorporating one of the symbols.
The students were divided into three groups, each working on one of the panels. Each panel was split into three sections to break down the work and they set to applying the cement and tiles. ‘ The group loved it,’ said Greg. Each student also designed one of the tiles to incorporate into the mosaic.
Greg said that there was plenty of help from other artists at Signal and everyone involved was very proud of the finished product which visitors will see at Newcourt for years to come.
