A STIFLING smell from a new sewage treatment works in Bray is causing fears among people in the area that someone may develop serious illness.

The problem exists near the Corke Abbey estate just off Old Connaught Road where this week some people have been physically sick from the odour.

The treatment plant is also situated near Bray Golf Club and one of the past captains, Mrs Lilo Buchanan, hit out at the authorities for allowing the problem to continue.

This particular part of Bray is the responsibility of Dublin County Council and she said that something will have to be done quickly, especially as the hot weather continues.

‘A few of us were playing last weekend and the smell got so bad that we just felt sick. It has been there before but it was never as bad as last weekend,’ said Mrs Buchanan.

She felt that the problems would create a health hazard and claimed that last week it extended as far as the shopping centre on Castle Street.

However, trying to find out all the relevant details about the problem, in the public interest, is like trying to extract information from a highly secretive document, at least as far as Dublin County Council is concerned.

Since Monday the Bray People has been trying to get information on this matter from the bureaucratic chambers of the authority without success.
