On for victory
Too late as Tinahely triumph
Within 60 seconds the sides were level as Eric Donoghue converted a free from 25 yards and Tinahely would go on and dominate the half although Donard missed some good chances.
Seán Pollard used his expert positional play to get in behind but missed the first major chance with the goal gaping.
Within minutes Donard nearly punished them in full but Lillis was on hand to beat away Eddie Flynn’s rasper from 10 yards.
Tinahely closed out the half with good points from the busy Conor Kenny and his namesake Shane as well as a handful of Donoghue frees to lead by six at the break.
They continued on in the same vein of domination in the second half, although Donard had their moments, and seemed to be cruising to victory with 10 minutes to go as they led 10 points to 2 with substitute Stephen Nolan giving them the eight-point cushion with a well taken point.
Flynn and Lawrence Daly added points before the latter pounced on a breaking ball in the box as his bullet found the top right corner to leave Tinahely supporters anxiously looking at their watches.
Anthony Phelan’s pointed 45 acted as an insurance point to give Tinahely a four-point buffer but they survived some nervous moments as Donard came at them hard in the final five minutes.
It was too little too late though for the West men as Tinahely deservedly came through to preserve their position at the top of the group and leave Donard with 2 must win matches against Coolkenno and Annacurra if they’re to qualify.
