MARTIAL ARTS ACADEMY

Local club Swift Kick Martial Arts Academy had a great great day on Saturday at the Irish Open in Citywest. Which is the biggest Kickboxing competitio­n in Europe. It was a complete team effort in even getting to the venue in all the snow, and two of their competitor­s couldn’t make it.

But they came away with an Amazing 3 x 1st Place, 5 x 2nd Place & 3 x 3rd Place. Leaving them 5th on the overall medal table after day 1 out of 201 clubs entered in the Tournament.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC Last week some of our teams played in some lovely sunshine but this past weekend all games across the land were off and it was all thanks to the combinatio­n of ‘Storm Emma’ and ‘ The Beast from the East’ who left the whole country blanketed in a couple of feet of snow. Hope fully the snow will have cleared for next weekend and if it does the players and coaches will all be happy.

The following are the fixtures for Saturday/Sunday, March 10/11: under-8s away to Wicklow Rovers Blue ko to be confirmed; under-9s away to Ashford Rovers ko to be confirmed; under-10s away to Wicklow Town ko to be confirmed; under-11s at home to Coolboy Rangers White ko to be confirmed; under-12s away to Avonmore B ko to be confirmed; under-14s away to Carnew FC ko to be confirmed (Fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

We have two players from the club celebratin­g their birthday’s in the coming week and they are Colin Healy from the under-eights and Shane Synnott from the under-14s. Happy birthday Colin and Shane from everyone in Newtown Juniors FC Also we wish one of our under-eights coaches Luke Hoban a very happy birthday which he celebrated recently.

Well done to our under-nine Red team who have made it to the finals of the WDSL Futsal which will be held in Arklow on Sunday, March 18. Well done everyone involved.

All our teams are back in training. There are also a couple of slots on all our teams at the moment so if there are any girl’s or boys who would like to join the club please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653 and he will provide you with all the informatio­n you will need.

Also in a new venture by the WDSL they have started a Girls Academy for all girl’s playing in the league that will also cater for girls who may not be a member of a club or a team. Training takes place for all age groups under-10, under-12 and under-14 at East Glendaloug­h School from 4.30 p.m. till 6 p.m. every Sunday evening. We had 34 players still standing going into week five but that number dropped by four going into the Monday Night Football between Crystal Palace and Manchester United. Week 6 fixtures will be for the weekend of Saturday the 10th – Monday, March 12. Many thanks everyone for your continued support. The WDSL Fundraiser ‘ The Kube’ will take place in the Parkview Hotel on Saturday, April 7. We have two participan­ts namely John Dunleavy and Stephen Nolan, who will both be raising funds for our club through this event. If you can sponsor either John or Stephen for any amount no matter how small please contact any committee member for further informatio­n.

On a sadder note everyone in Newtown Juniors FC wish to extend their sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Jack Martin from O’Neill Park, who sadly passed away last week. May he rest in peace.

ST PATRICK’S DAY PARADE

The village will once again hold the annual St Patrick’s Day parade on Saturday, March 17. We are inviting all clubs societies businesses to get involved. The parade assembly at Gregory’s Garage and makes it way through the village and returning from post office to reviewing stand opposite Druids Well.

Newtown 2050 as part of Team Newtown with Newtown and District Forum recently submitted their response to the LADP Many thanks to all those who made suggestion­s and expressed interest.

STRICTLY NEWTOWN

We are off and running, or should I say jiving. Please help us in making Strictly Newtown a great success. Support our dancers and help them make Greenway connection­s to serve our village promoting safe travel for kids and adults, health, wildlife and the future of our viillage.

We need anyone with PRO experience to help promote Strictly.

We also need anyone who has experience fo dealing with local authority/LEader funding applicatio­ns, strong admistrati­ve etc to form a team for the village to start applying for funding for various projects including the Greenway.
