Drama aplenty as Town survive St Anthony’s comeback

ARKLOW TOWN A ST ANTHONYS

THERE was plenty of drama in this Under-12 Premier Jako Cup decider on the bottom pitch in Celtic Park last Saturday afternoon as Arklow Town A survived a courageous comeback from St Anthony’s to win by 6-4 on a sweltering day at the fantastic Arklow Celtic grounds.

Arklow Town looked to be coasting to a straight-forward victory at the break when they led 3-0 thanks to fine goals from Tiernan Gahan, Shane Monaghan and Luke McGrath. This lead was opened despite some gallant defending from the Kilcoole side, but you felt that there was a backlash coming from the St Anthony’s team if they could just get a foothold in the game.

Despite a Jamie Anderson strike early in the second half, things were looking bleak for St Anthony’s when Arklow Town A opened up a 5-1 lead when substitute Kevin Dunne and that man Shane Monaghan grabbed two more goals.

However, there’s plenty of heart and belief in this St Anthony’s side and in the final five minutes of the game goals from Dale van Dalen, Jamie Anderson with his second and Sean McLeavy brought the Kilcoole lads right back into the game trailing by just a single goal at 5-4.

Alas, with the game in injury time, St Anthony’s were dealt a killer blow when Tiernan Gahan, the young man who had started the scoring in this game, popped up to net his second and send the Town players and supporters wild with delight as they deservedly captured the Under-12 Premier Jako Cup crown.
