Blessington win derby
BLESSINGTON VALLEYMOUNT 5-20 2-08
LAKESIDE neighbours, Blessington and Valleymount, renewed old acquaintances in Hollywood on Monday evening.
Blessington put in a powerful second half display to put somewhat of a gloss on the end scoreline. However, Valleymount had matched their counterparts for the first 25 minutes in an entertaining game of football.
Gary Walsh opened the scoring for Valleymount with a point before Seamus Jackson levelled matters. A Jordan McGarr free put the blues ahead.
Jeff Kemmy dropped a high ball into the danger zone where goalie Shane Breen fielded brilliantly, but in trying to clear his lines, he fouled a forward and a penalty was awarded. Gary Walsh fired low to the net to restore the lead.
Blessington added a brace of points after good work by Sean Mescall and Danielius Sarkauskas, who were growing into the game by the minute. Glen Cullen popped over a point to close out the opening quarter.
Big Kiev Leonard levelled matters as he split the posts from nearly 60 metres out the field, for one of the scores of the evening. Conor Harpur saved brilliantly to deny Adam Murphy a certain goal.
Sean Mescall was the driving force for the Blues who rallied in the final few minutes of the half, tagging on 1-04 without reply to leave the half-time score 1-10 to 1-04 in favour of Blessington. Peter Behan and Stephen Doyle had the luxury of a healthy subs bench and introduced a few fresh legs for the restart.
A young powerful Blessington side now went up a gear and finished out the stronger with some fine performances from the Mescall brothers and Danielius Sarkauskas along with Jeff Kemmy and Gary Walsh who were outstanding for Valleymount.
After the game Martin Coleman, thanked both teams, the match officials and Hollywood club for hosting. Martin presented the Valleymount Captain, Kiev Leonard with a cup for winning their side of the league. Martin Coleman then presented Blessington captain, James Kearns with the cup. Blessington now go forward to meet Tinahely in the next section.
