BALLYMONEY lifted the SE Under-14 football league title this week in 1996 with a narrow two points victory over Annacurra/ Aughrim in a thrilling final in Pearse’s Park, Arklow.
‘Showing great determination and teamwork, the winners led by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break, but then the game developed into a ding-dong battle between two well matched sides in the second half.
‘Annacurra/Aughrim took the lead, 1-7 to 1-6, midway through the second half but a great point from Darren McAndrew levelled the scores.
The losers edged in front again with a Rory McArdle goal but man of the match Andrew Cullen made it all square once again.
‘A Jason Byrne strike then put Annacurra/Aughrim ahead for a third time, but Andrew Cullen converted from the penalty spot for Ballymoney after John Paul Connollly was brought down in the box.
‘Two well-taken points from John Gilvarry sealed victory for Ballymoney at the finish with Andrew Cullen bagging a hat-trick.’
