Typically, Sony attempts to cover all the bases with its versatile range of Xperia smartphones. The E1 is a more entry-level offering, which aims to offer sophisticated smartphone capability for a fraction of the cost of some of its high-end counterparts.

The E1 stands out a bit more than some of the Xperia range thanks to its two-tone textured plastic build and the distinctive Sony start button on the side. It feels quite comfortable in hand, perfectly suited for one-handed use, and it’s light at just 120g, yet still robust. The E1 is certainly capable of withstanding a couple of knocks.

Music lovers may be particularly interested in the Xperia E1, which features a dedicated Walkman button at the top. This button is used to kickstart the Walkman app; bring up a player control, even while the phone is locked; and toggle play and pause. Conveniently, the app remembers what you were listening to even if you switched it off between sessions.

If you want to share your aural experience with friends, the 100 decibel speaker will certainly help you out. And if those friends happen to be elsewhere, you can keep them up to date thanks to the E1’s ability to share tunes with Facebook friends. You can also download music info, look stuff up online like YouTube videos, Wikipedia, lyrics searches, and even find karaoke videos.

The 4-inch screen offers a resolution of 800x480 pixels (233ppi) and this is more than sharp enough to read small text on web pages. The handset is powered by a dual-core 1.2 GHz processor and 512MB RAM, so it’s perfectly capable of general use and browsing, but you won’t be switching between multiple apps in a hurry. On the other hand, battery life is a major plus with a couple of days of frequent use a common occurrence.

Sony’s Xperia E1 is an affordable, yet capable handset and is certainly worth a look if you’re into your music.
