ST FECHIN’S got their Division 2 campaign off to a winning start with a seven-point victory over O’Connell’s in a high-scoring encounter at the Grove on Saturday night.

The home side got off to a great start when they were awarded a penalty in the first minute after Stuart Osborne was taken down in the area and Niall Conlon sent the keeper the wrong way from the spot kick.

A Dean Corrigan point increased the Bellingham team’s lead, but the visitors then landed the next six points without reply, with braces from Danny Burnell, Ronan Holcroft and Karl McDonnell. However, O’Connell’s replied with two quick points to level the game 1-3 to 0-6 after 18 minutes.

Points from Ryan Sheridan and Jamie King for the visitors were again quickly countered with two from Conlon and Conor Culligan to keep the teams level, but the Termonfeckin men then went three clear with scores from Burnell, Bevan Duffy and Sheridan.

Conlon got the last point of the half from a free to leave the score at the break 0-11 to 1-6 to the visitors.

Corrigan added another point for the O’Connell’s at the start of the second half, but the Fechin’s then launched a quick attack that resulted in Holcroft hitting the net.

The sides shared the next six points to leave the score 1-14 to 1-10 after 44 minutes. But the visitors then scored 1-3 in the next five minutes. The goal came from Burnell, who was going for a point when the ball lobbed over the keeper into the net, and the points were scored by Holcroft, McDonnell and Leo McGrane.

Conlon scored a brace to reduce the margin to eight, but a Holcroft point and then a tap-in goal by the same man after a great run by Niall Devlin and another point by Burnell increased the lead to 13 with five minutes to go.

Fair play to the home side they did not give up and a point from McGill and then a goal from Culligan was followed by a brace of points from Conlon to take his tally to 1-10 for the night and make the scoreboard look more respectable.
